PRODUCTS OF JP LABS FOR CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL, RADIOLOGICAL & NUCLEAR (CBRN) INDUSTRY
CBRN INDUSTRY
CBRN relates to the defense against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents as well as the protective measures taken in defense including detection, protection, decontamination, and avoidance. JP Labs has been working on the detection of warfare agents since 1984, where a project was funded by the US Army for developing color changing indicators for detecting warfare agents. Since then, JP Labs has developed dosimeters (devices to measure total exposure) for radiation and chemicals.
RADTRIAGE, AN EMERGENCY RADIATION DOSIMETER
In a radiological emergency such as an accident at a nuclear power plant or an attack with a dirty bomb, one of the first things one needs is a dosimeter. All other radiation dosimeters are expensive, bulky, fragile, require a power source or a reader and are not readily deployable in an emergency. RADTriage is the only credit card sized, instantly color developing, emergency dosimeter for monitoring a medically significant dose of ~20 mSv (diagnostic/tolerable dose) through ~10,000 mSv (fatal dose). It minimizes panic and worry, and triages radiation exposure for medical treatment in a radiological incident. It is ready 24/7 and requires no reader, batteries or maintenance. For a summary, see a video at https://youtu.be/uTaKmhyluHo. The other modifications of RADTriage are RADSticker (post office stamp sized RADTriage), SeeRad business card (video at https://youtu.be/sPPQwD849DI) and RADTriage-TLD (a dual-sensor high accuracy dosimeter). These are the only products JP Labs manufactures. RADTriage has been tested in the world’s top independent laboratories and field proven for more than two decades. About 100,000 citizens of Japan used them during the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident and nearly 400,000 were used worldwide in 2011. It is used by first responders, military, nuclear power plants and people living around nuclear power plants. It can also be stockpiled by federal, state and city governments for emergency preparedness. The technology is a recipient of many awards and recognitions, such as Frost & Sullivan “Excellence in Technology” in 2004, “R&D 100” in 2005 and Edison Patent Award in 2013.
TOXIC GAS DOSIMETERS
There is a concern that deadly chemicals such as chlorine (used for water treatment) and ethylene oxide (EtO, used for sterilization of some medical supplies) can be released in an accident or a terrorist attack. We have developed color changing and self-reading detectors/dosimeters for monitoring exposure to several toxic chemicals such as chlorine, ethylene oxide, ozone, and hydrogen peroxide. These chemical indicators are optimized in the lab.
ELECTRONIC DETECTION OF CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL AGENTS
We have a patent pending on the detection of biological and chemical agents at very low levels (e.g., ppm). The detection is based on the destruction of highly sensitive nano-structures. When these nanostructures are destroyed by reacting with chemical or biological agents, there is a million times change in properties. Therefore, the methods and devices based on the destruction of nanostructures are very sensitive. These electronic devices still need to be fully developed.
SELF-EXPIRING VISITOR’S BADGES
We have also developed self-expiring, single-use visitors’ badges for high-security places to prevent the entry of unauthorized individuals as well as the re-entry of previously authorized visitors or contractors. After a predetermined period of time, the badge will irreversibly change color and self-cancel.

The photos of a few color changing or self-reading products for the CBRN industry are shown on the right-hand side of this flyer. For videos of these devices, please click on https://youtu.be/nZLDbjOamUI.
PATENTS:
More than 15 patents are issued and about ten patents are pending on these CBRN related products.
MARKET:
CBRN is a rapidly growing industry. There is essentially no completion for many of these products. The potential market for these products can range in tens of millions of dollars per year. Many of these products cost less than $0.50 and sell for $10-$20 per piece. JP Labs has stockpiled ~50K RADTriage cards, ~200K sensors, and enough materials to manufacture a million dosimeters. JP Labs has a separate facility for manufacturing these products.
