RADIATION RELATED PRODUCTS OF JP LABS FOR HEALTH CARE AND HOSPITAL INDUSTRIES

JP LABS’ PRODUCTS FOR HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY

JP Labs has been developing products, including time-temperature and freeze indicators, for the pharmaceutical industry since 1983. More information on time-temperature and freeze indicators are summarized in the flyer “Products of JP Labs for Perishable and Pharmaceutical Industry”. RADTriage, an emergency radiation dosimeter, and other related products for CBRN industry are summarized in the flyer “Products of JP Labs for Chemical, Biological, Radiological & Nuclear (CBRN) Industry”. Some of these dosimeters, such as RADTriage-TLD, can be used by hospital personnel working on radiation. For a summary, see a video at https://youtu.be/uTaKmhyluHo.

BLOOD RADIATION INDICATOR

About 10% of fresh blood (~11 million units) is radiated at a dose of 25 kGy. Commercially available blood radiation indicators are difficult to make, require refrigeration, develop color prematurely and are very sensitive to UV/sunlight. An improved formulation of RADTriage is used to make the sensor for the blood radiation indicator. Our blood radiation indicator is easy to manufacture using commercially available printing equipment. Just like RADTriage, it has no effect of ambient light and can be stored at room temperature for years. The blood radiation indicator is fully optimized in the lab but requires manufacturing and FDA approval. These indicators barely cost a few cents to manufacture yet are sold for a dollar. The estimated market for the blood radiation indicator is about $10 million per year.

FILM FOR RADIATION IMAGING AND MONITORING THERAPY

Radiographic films are commercially available. We have developed significantly superior radiation sensitive films for imaging radiation sources and for monitoring radiation therapy. Our film is not affected by ambient light and can be stored for many years at room temperature. An improved formulation of the RADTriage sensor is used to make these radiochromic films. A similar film can be used for monitoring radiation therapy and for industrial radiography. The radiation sensitive materials for making the above radiation products are diacetylenes. Dr. Patel, President of JP Labs, is one of the pioneers on diacetylenes and has been working on them since 1975. He has published about 25 papers and 40 patents on diacetylenes and related products.

3D DOSIMETRY

Tumors are three dimensional (3D) and the radiation dose delivered to kill the tumor should be precisely aimed at the tumor and not to the surrounding healthy tissues. Dose delivery systems are calibrated using three-dimensional phantoms and radiation detectors. Recently, self-developing 3D solid and gel dosimeter phantoms have been developed. We have also developed a solid state 3D dosimeter for radiation therapy planning. Diacetylenes and other radiation sensitive formulations are dispersed or dissolved in acrylic resin and used as a sensor material. When radiated from different directions, it creates the shape of the tumor in the center.

DO-IT-YOURSELF DEVICE FOR MONITORING RADON

Radon is a radioactive gas which is found in the basements of houses. Radon can cause cancer. Commercially available devices are expensive and need to be returned for analysis. JP Labs has developed a do-it-yourself device for monitoring radon gas which leaves a permanent record with the user. The device has a color producing layer. It is based on the etching of tracks produced by the particles emitted by radon which are made visible to naked eye. The concentration of the radon gas is determined from the number of track spots using a calibration chart/table. The major advantages of our device over the commercially available devices include: (1) being a do-it-yourself device, the user does not need to return the device to a laboratory for analysis and interpretation of the results, (2) it leaves a permanent record of the results with users and (3) it would be less expensive than those available in the market.

STERILIZATION INDICATOR

JP Labs has also developed highly accurate color changing and self-reading indicators for sterilization of medical supplies with steam, ethylene oxide, dry heat, and radiation. These indicators are also machine readable with a barcode reader.

PATENTS:

More than 10 patents are issued and about ten patents are pending on these healthcare and radiation-related products.

MARKET:

Similar products available in the market are decades old products and do not meet today’s market needs. The market for these products is in tens of millions of dollars per year.
